What not to do when you're paying for a psychic reading

A lot of people talk about what kinds of readers to avoid — and honestly, fair. There are plenty of disingenuous ones out there, and unethical behaviour should be called out. I’m all for that.

But I wanted to approach this topic from a different angle.

Because I’ve read for a lot of people — in person and over the phones — and I’ve noticed a few things that can affect the quality of a reading, even when the reader is genuine. None of what I’m about to say is absolute, and with an experienced reader it often won’t make a huge difference anyway… but they’re good-to-knows if you actually want the clearest connection possible.

The biggest thing I see is people feeling like they need to “help” the reader by telling them the whole story upfront. They’ll explain the background, the relationship history, what happened last week, what they’re scared of, what they hope the answer is… and it makes sense. We all want to be understood. If you want to share a little, thats up to you, a good reader will give you what they get regardless, but you dont need to do that.

But a psychic reading isn’t a therapy session unless you want it to be. A reader is tuning into your energy, not collecting a case file. If they need clarification, they’ll ask brief questions — “does this make sense?” “would you recognise this?” “is there a brother in spirit?” — quick check-ins to calibrate. That’s different to a full download before the reading has even started.

Especially when it comes to predictions, a lot of what comes through won’t make sense in the moment anyway. And that leads to the second thing I see all the time: people protesting the message as it comes through.

You hear something and you jump in with “no, that can’t be right,” or “that’s not me,” or “that’s not happening,” or you start explaining why it doesn’t fit. I get it — you’re paying for clarity, so you want it to match your current reality.

But that kind of resistance can cut the energy off, particularly if the reader is still finding their feet. The channel needs flow. When you argue the message while it’s arriving, Spirit/God/Universe/Source, will hang up on you. They're not there to fight, they're there to help.

And here’s the truth: it’s not up to a reader to make sense of what they’re getting for you — that’s the your job. A good reader will tell you what they receive. Your job is to sit with it and let it unfold or make appropriate steps to change the outcome where you can. A lot of readings make sense later, once you’re out of the emotional charge of the session… especially when you’ve gone in wanting to hear what you want to hear. The magic comes after the reading, something will happening and you'll be like "thats it!", a year later you may relisten to the recording and be able to confirm the messages. The point is healing, so you know there is more to this life, so you know you're not alone. Once a year is plenty! But i find it fun, so even though im a reader i always enjoy going to another psychic or medium. Again, not often. Once a year is plenty, even once ever six month is plenty! Me mentor would argue, once in a lifetime is plenty enough. And i kind of agree. Still, its fun so i get it. And when you go, make the most of it, because its not cheap and often you're waiting for that appointment.

The thing is, even if you went to ten readers, you’ll often get similar themes — but we’re limited sometimes by our own experiences, both reader and client. The reader has their symbols and language. The client has their current lens and what they’re ready to see. So sometimes the message is accurate, but you can’t connect the dots yet.

There’s another piece worth mentioning too: a lot of people don’t just want a reading — they want reassurance. They want the reader to tell them what they want to hear. They want you to confirm the outcome they’re attached to. The ex is coming back, the job is guaranteed, the timeline is exactly what they’re hoping for. An honest reader won’t do that.

A good reader will tell you what they genuinely pick up in that moment — even if it challenges you, even if it’s not the fantasy. That’s where the value is. Truth, clarity, guidance — not performance.

So if you’re paying to see a psychic or medium, go in with an open heart. Answer briefly when you’re asked. Let the message land, even if it doesn’t make sense yet. Most readers don’t like being treated like performing monkeys. They’re not there to prove anything to you. They’re translating what they receive — and the clearer your energy is, the clearer the connection will be.
