Runes

Evelynn Road

Runes are ancient symbols that form an alphabet used in various Germanic languages before the adoption of the Latin alphabet. They were employed for writing, divination, and magical purposes among the Germanic peoples of Europe, primarily during the Viking Age (8th to 11th centuries) and the preceding centuries.

The runic alphabet, known as the Futhark, consists of 24 letters, divided into three groups or aettir. The earliest runic inscriptions date back to the 2nd century CE and were found in Northern Europe, particularly in Scandinavia and the British Isles. The Vikings, in particular, used runes extensively for communication, as seen in runestones, amulets, and other artifacts.

Each rune has its own symbolic meaning and associations with specific concepts, deities, or natural elements. For example, the rune "Fehu" symbolizes wealth and abundance, while "Ansuz" represents divine inspiration and communication.

The practice of runic divination, known as "rune casting" or "rune reading," involves randomly selecting runes from a pouch or set and interpreting their meanings. There are various methods of rune casting, including drawing a single rune for a quick insight or arranging them in a pattern such as the "Three Rune Spread" or the "Norn Spread" for more in-depth readings.

In addition to divination, runes were believed to possess magical properties and were used in rituals, spells, and charms for protection, healing, and other purposes. Inscribing runes on objects, such as weapons or jewellery, was thought to imbue them with magical powers.

Today, runes continue to be used for divination, magic, and spiritual purposes by practitioners of contemporary Paganism, Heathenry, and other neopagan traditions. Many people also find personal significance and guidance in working with runes for self-reflection, meditation, and personal growth.

Rune sets typically consist of 24 or 25 runes, each inscribed on small stones, wood, or metal pieces. Traditional runic alphabets include the Elder Futhark, the Younger Futhark, and the Anglo-Saxon Futhorc, each with its own variations in symbols and meanings.

Interpreting runes requires a combination of knowledge of the runic symbols, intuition, and understanding of their context within a reading. While there are many books and resources available on runic divination, personal insight and connection with the symbols are essential for accurate readings.

As with any form of divination, it's essential to approach rune casting with respect, responsibility, and ethical awareness. Practitioners should strive to use runes for constructive purposes, respecting the free will and privacy of others.

How to cast Runes

Setting the Intention: Before using the runes, it's important to set your intention or question clearly in your mind. This will help guide the reading and provide focused insight.

Shuffling the Runes: Hold the runes in your hands and focus on your intention. Shuffle the runes while concentrating on your question or the issue you seek guidance on. You can also mix them on a flat surface if you prefer.

Drawing the Runes: When you feel ready, draw a certain number of runes from the pouch or spread them out face down. The number of runes drawn can vary depending on the type of reading you're doing or your personal preference. Traditionally, three runes are often drawn for a simple past-present-future reading.

Interpreting the Runes: Flip over the runes one by one and take note of the symbols. Pay attention to any thoughts, feelings, or impressions you receive when you see each rune. Interpret the meanings of the runes based on your intuition, knowledge of runic symbolism, and the context of your question or situation.

Reflecting on the Spread: Once all the runes have been drawn and interpreted, take a moment to reflect on the overall message or theme of the reading. Consider how the individual meanings of each rune relate to one another and to your question or issue.

Taking Action: Based on the insights gained from the rune reading, consider what actions or changes you may need to make in your life. Runes can offer guidance and perspective, but ultimately, it's up to you to take responsibility for your decisions and actions.

Cleansing and Storing: After your reading, it's a good idea to cleanse your runes to clear them of any lingering energies and reset them for future use. You can do this by smudging them with sage or placing them in moonlight. Store your runes in a pouch or box when not in use to keep them safe and energetically protected.
